MD&M West 2026: MedTech Momentum, Michigan Strength, and Why Relationships Still Win
Feb 10, 2026 | 2 min read
Walking the floor at MD&M West this year, I was reminded why I love working at the intersection of engineering, MedTech, and manufacturing.
As an account executive and former mechanical engineer, I went to Anaheim looking for new ideas and tools that could help DISHER Engineering’s med device customers move faster and more confidently from concept to production. I left with something even more valuable: a renewed appreciation for the strength of Michigan’s MedTech ecosystem and the importance of strong relationships in solving hard problems.
My Top 3 Takeaways from MD&M West 2026
1. Michigan’s Cradle-to-grave MedTech Ecosystem
One of the highlights of the show for me was a Michigan-focused booth hosted by several economic development organizations, including the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. It was a tangible picture of what I like to call “cradle-to-grave” capability.
Michigan has strategic partnerships with cutting-edge healthcare systems that are pushing the boundaries of care delivery. It has startups bringing bold new ideas to market, proven product development teams that know how to turn those ideas into functional designs, and a deep base of manufacturing partners who can build at scale. For med device companies, this means you can go from first sketch to validated production without ever leaving a tightly connected regional network.
2. Why Operational Visibility Matters on the Floor
Another theme that stood out was operational visibility on the manufacturing floor.
I spent time with a company offering clip-on machine sensors that make it simple to monitor performance, increase uptime, and reduce operating costs. It immediately made me think of a customer I worked with who had invested in a very expensive custom machine. On paper, it was exactly what they needed, but in reality, it was too finicky and specific for the variety of products they needed it to run.
A solution that provides real-time insight into how machines are being used, where they struggle, and how they respond to variation can bring clarity not just for day-to-day operations but also for future capital investments and continuous improvement efforts.
3. Relationships, Purpose, and Solving Hard Problems
Beyond the technology and solutions, the most meaningful part of MD&M West was the people I met. Throughout the event, I ran into a large number of customers and connections from across the industry. Despite working at different companies and on very different products, everyone shared a common mission: improving health outcomes and building a better future.
That alignment reinforced something we talk about a lot at DISHER Engineering—our purpose is to Make a Positive Difference with our customers, coworkers, and communities. The complex engineering projects we support are an expression of that purpose, but they almost always start in the same simple way: an honest conversation about constraints, risk, and challenges that feel nearly insurmountable.
